Shavuot: An Eternal Invitation
Shavuot (also known as the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost) is from sundown on June 1 to sundown on June 3 this year. The counting of the omer for 49 days since Passover concludes on this 50th day, marking Shavuot. The feast celebrates the beginning of the wheat harvest and, importantly, the giving of Torah (which includes the Ten Commandments) on Mount Sinai.
In Exodus 19, God invites the Jewish people into a covenant with Him, much like a wedding invitation. He called to Moses from the mountain, saying:
“‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.’” (Exodus 19:3-6).
What an invitation! The God of the universe beckons His people into an intimate relationship, which is sealed with the giving of the Torah.
In response, when Moses told the children of Israel what the Lord commanded him, “[all] the people answered together and said, ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do.’” (Exodus 19:8).
Amid thunderings, lightning, a thick cloud, and the trumpet sound, the Lord demonstrated His power and love as the people trembled. In the Mount Sinai story and at Shavuot, the heart of a Celestial Father shines through, beckoning His people both then and now into a relationship, a heart connection, and an invitation to know His ways through His Word.
May there once again be a resounding eagerness for the people of Israel and from every nation to know Him, know His Scriptures, and live in covenantal relationship.
